Many people are busy with work and home for most of their adult life, but then the children grow up and leave home or there is a relocation or retirement, and then the demands of both home and work subside. Most want to continue to be active, and to contribute to the community. Others want to develop new friendships and activities outside the home. Volunteering at St. Gerard enables you to be active, meet new people and contribute to the community by being part of the St. Gerard mission.

St. Gerard's mission is to provide a safe-haven environment for pregnant teenage girls where they may have their children while attending an accredited high school. By creating a mentally well balanced young woman, with a solid academic education, she will be better able to care for herself and her child, forever breaking the poverty, abuse and welfare cycles so prevalent in this underserved segment of our society. The programs empower these young women and prepares each girl with the education and life skills to live independently and succeed after graduation. In addition to the high school, services include an on-campus licensed teaching day care center, a residence for abandoned, abused or neglected pregnant teens, a Pregnancy Crisis Center for all women and adoption services. The volunteers are a crucial link in attaining the mission of St. Gerard Campus.

There are volunteer positions in all programs including but not limited to: teaching, reception, counseling, cooking, gardening and driving. Some volunteers enjoy the close interaction with the pregnant young ladies; others chose to work behind the scenes stuffing envelopes, preparing the school lunch meal, gardening, etc.

Joan Niebuhr volunteers in two positions. Joan says "I volunteer as a Pregnancy counselor/sonographer. I enjoy telling the pregnant women how we can help them from the pregnancy test to sonograms, and afterwards with diapers, wipes, cribs and pack and plays. It is a joy to be with them as they experience seeing their baby during the sonogram. I also volunteer at the front desk meeting the community and talking to them. It is really a miracle when a woman comes in and needs something special which we don't have and we put her name on our waiting list, and 2 hours later we call her up to tell her it just came in !"
