More than 150 cancer survivors, friends and family gathered together at Flagler Hospital on Sunday, June 4th to celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day. National Cancer Survivors Day® is an annual, treasured Celebration of Life that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide, and around the world, on the first Sunday in June. It is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families, and an outreach to the community. On National Cancer Survivors Day®, thousands gather across the globe to honor cancer survivors and to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding, and even inspiring.

This day provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer – including America's more than 15.5 million cancer survivors – to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way. It is also a day to draw attention to the ongoing challenges of cancer survivorship in order to promote more resources, research, and survivor-friendly legislation to improve cancer survivors' quality of life.

Guests at Flagler Hospital's event had an opportunity to hear messages of hope and inspiration from Flagler's Chief Operating Officer Christopher Schmidt, Employee Assistance Program Coordinator, Renee Wyden and Cancer Specialists of Northeast Florida's Dr. Keith Justice.

Mr. Schmidt also introduced Flagler Hospital and Cancer Specialists of Northeast Florida's new radiation treatment center slated to open in Fall of 2017.

About the Radiation Treatment Center:

Flagler Hospital has partnered with Cancer Specialists of North Florida to establish a new radiation treatment center on campus, which is expected to open in Fall of 2017. Construction is slated to begin this month, adjacent to the Flagler Imaging Center.

"It is important to ensure a seamless, top quality experience for all the patients in our cancer program," said Flagler Hospital President and CEO, Joe Gordy. "This new center will allow us to deliver the latest and best in radiation treatment, supported by inter-professional expertise, education and patient navigation provided through our nationally accredited cancer institute."

The center will feature Elekta's Versa HD, which delivers the full spectrum of conventional radiotherapy techniques and also advances modern cancer care with the added versatility to deliver linear accelerator-based stereotactic treatments – all within a single system. Keeping the comfort of patients in mind, the Versa HD is also designed with ergonomic features, softer streamlined shapes, low mechanical noise and ambient lighting effects.

"We are pleased to partner with Flagler Hospital to provide the highest level of care to patients in the St. Augustine community throughout their cancer journey," added Cancer Specialists of Northeast Florida CEO Bob Phelan. "Trained at some of the top medical schools and cancer centers in the nation, our doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and support staff are committed to providing the information, education, compassion, and support our patients and their families need."

The Flagler Hospital Cancer Institute is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer & also by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
