Cuba – Expert Advice From AAA Travel

August 1, 2017 | View PDF

As of August 2017, our advice for traveling to Cuba is as follows.

Discover a land of stark contrasts, rich cultural traditions and warm, welcoming people who are proud of their beautiful country. Discover a legendary island nation. Discover Cuba.

Authentic days. Unbelievable nights. Get ready for a journey that's just as momentous as the destination. You'll make history and hashtags as one of the first to sail to Cuba onboard Empress of the Seas®. It's hot Havana nights and Caribbean cool wrapped up in one immersive getaway from Royal Caribbean International (RCI) and AAA Travel. Although it's easier than ever to visit Cuba, Americans cannot travel to Cuba strictly for tourism. If you want to visit, you need to participate in an education-based "people-to-people" itinerary, which provides meaningful contact with Cuban people, from professors to artists, farmers, factory owners, doctors and more. AAA Travel can help demystify the trip-planning complexities. Plus, offer guidance and advice to help ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise to Cuba.

5 Practical Travel Tips For Your Trip To Cuba

1. Money Bring enough cash to last your entire trip, as U.S.-issued debit cards, credit cards and travelers cheques will not work at most locations, and ATMs are uncommon. Most tourism transactions are paid for with CUCs (Cuban Convertible pesos, pronounced "kooks"). Money exchange stations are conveniently located at the cruise terminal, in hotel lobbies, and in multiple locations in Old Havana.

2. Souvenirs Cuban cigars and rum make great mementos that can help you relive your Cuban experience, as long as they are purchased for personal consumption, at approved retail stores.

3. Connectivity Cell phone service is steadily improving in Cuba. Sprint and Verizon offer roaming service in the country. If your carrier offers a roaming plan and your mobile phone is capable of roaming in Cuba, you should ask your carrier about any additional charges for voice calls, data, and outgoing text messages that you may incur during your trip. Wi-Fi is available onboard RCI ships; however, you will not have access to the internet while ashore in Cuba.

4. Travel Insurance All travelers to Cuba are required to have medical insurance coverage for the length of their stay, but most U.S. policies do not cover insurance abroad. AAA Travel can provide additional details and help you understand how our travel insurance partner, Allianz Global Assistance, brings additional peace of mind with coverage for accidents, medical emergencies, illness, and even lost baggage.

5. Local Climate Due to the tropical climate, wear loose fitting airy clothes, comfortable shoes and a hat. As only a few places are air conditioned, you may also want to bring a cooling towel, fan or mister.

Take the unique opportunity and experience a taste of local flavor and fascinating culture while discovering the timeless sights and sounds of nostalgic Havana. Right now is the best time to book your trip to Cuba and take advantage of special AAA Vacations® amenities and limited-time special offers on select departures.
