Sell Your Car Quickly, Easily, and for Good $$

Is it time to sell your car? Maybe you’re downsizing your “family fleet”, buying a replacement vehicle from a dealership that won’t give you a fair trade-in value, or buying a replacement vehicle from a private party that (obviously) won’t take your trade-in. You can always stick it out on the front lawn with some signs as long as your HOA doesn’t mind, but there are much better options these days. Let’s see which one is right for you.

Sell directly to an individual

You have the potential to maximize what you get for your car by eliminating the middleman and selling your car directly to another individual. You can get great exposure by listing your car on one or more of the numerous listing sites. Some of the most popular are Craigslist, Autotrader, Cars.com, and CarGurus.

Advantages

• You may be able to maximize what you get for your car. CarGurus claims that you can yield $1,200 more on average by selling your car directly as opposed to trading it in at a dealership.

Disadvantages

• It takes on average four to eight weeks to sell a car.

• You may have to pay a listing fee. Craigslist currently charges $5 to list your car. You can list on CarGurus for free but you pay $99 when you sell your car (They offer assistance with funds and title transfer for this fee.) Other sites may have a free

listing package that limits you to just a few pictures and does not provide buyers with a vehicle history report.

• You will need to respond by email and/or phone to numerous inquiries.

• You will need to meet with prospective buyers whom you will have to share some of your personal information when it comes time to complete the tag transfer. Most will also want to test drive the car, which could become very time-consuming.

• You will need to make sure the proper procedures and paperwork are completed. In Florida this consists of:

• A VIN and Odometer Verification upon inspection by a Florida Motor Vehicle Inspector, dealer, notary public, or law enforcement officer if the vehicle was not previously titled in Florida.

• Proper title transfer. Fl Department of Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) recommends this is done at a motor vehicle service center.

• Notice of Sale, form HSMV 82050. Filing this form with FLHSMV removes your registration from the vehicle and helps you avoid any liability after the sale.

Sell to CarMax or another dealer

CarMax was ahead of the pack as one of the first major dealerships to promote selling your car to them even if you don’t buy one of theirs.

Advantages

• All paperwork is handled by the dealership.

• You can sell your car to CarMax the same day it is appraised or up to 7 days after.

Disadvantages

• Unless you live within the Chicago or Charlotte market areas you must go to a local store to get an appraisal you can’t complete any of the process online.

• CarMax won’t budge on their number. Since used car sales are now a significant part of most New Car Franchise dealerships’ sales, many are aggressive in the figures they will give to buy or trade a car and will often beat a CarMax offer. Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer

• Kelley Blue Book (KBB) has been a trusted independent consumer resource for car valuations since 1926!

• You can get an Instant Cash Offer for your car at KBB.com. You’ll need to enter some equipment and condition information, but the process is fairly short and can be completed online from anywhere.

• You will receive a guaranteed offer directly from KBB shortly after you submit your inquiry. The offer will give you the location of the closest KBB buying center where you can redeem your offer.

• The KBB Buying Center takes care of all paperwork and has you on your way with cash in hand in no time!
